Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main differences between a conventional framed house and a SIPS system?

1.  Dimensional lumber with wood sheathing on one side, drywall in-between and fibrous insulation in between has been the method of choice for a number of years. A SIPS system utilizes a foam core with wood sheathing on both sides and forms the structural elements as well as superior insulation qualities in one step.

2. Air sealing is another distinct difference. Limiting the movement of air through the building envelope is critical to control indoor air quality and utility bills.

How much does a SIPS building cost to build compared to a conventionally framed home?

Certainly the most common, and one the first question to be asked; and understandably so, but is not the right question we should be asking. What does the house cost to live in, in comparison takes all elements into consideration. Not only the cost of construction, but operating costs must be compared to fully appreciate the advantages of a SIPS system.

What are the major advantages of a Performance Based construction method?

Comfort, Safety, Efficiency and lasting value. A healthy choice using today’s materials and methods.

How long do they take to build?

It is not uncommon to see a 30% reduction in construction timeframes.

The term “thermal bridging” is mentioned in a number of areas, what is it? And is it a significant issue?

Conventional construction utilizes solid sawn lumber to form the “bones of the building”.

Full depth framing members provide a direct path between the extremes of the outside to the inside where you are trying to maintain comfortable and healthy conditions. Essentially you are working against your space conditioning equipment.
